Cimicifuga racemosa, commonly known as Black Cohosh or Snakeroot, is a herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the buttercup family. Hillside Black Beauty is a variety of Cimicifuga racemosa that is known for its dark purplish-black foliage, which adds a striking contrast to its creamy-white flowers. It is a native plant of eastern North America and grows up to 4-6 feet in height.
The leaves of Cimicifuga racemosa Hillside Black Beauty are deeply cut and have a glossy finish. The foliage emerges dark purple to black and matures to a dark green shade. In late summer to early fall, the plant produces long spikes of tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that are held above the foliage on tall stems. The flowers give way to attractive seed pods that resemble dark berries and persist well into winter.
Cimicifuga racemosa Hillside Black Beauty is a hardy plant that grows well in moist, well-drained soils in partial shade to full shade. It prefers rich, organic soils but can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. This plant is ideal for adding dramatic foliage contrast to a woodland garden, shade garden, or mixed border. It is also an excellent choice for attracting butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.
