    DESCRIPTION

Geum coccineum Koi, also known as Scarlet Avens, is a clump-forming perennial with a compact habit that produces stunning, semi-double to double, scarlet-red flowers from late spring to mid-summer. The flowers have five rounded petals and a central boss of yellow stamens that stand out beautifully against the dark green, slightly hairy, foliage. The blooms are held on erect stems that rise above the foliage to a height of about 14-16 inches (35-40 cm).

The foliage of Geum coccineum Koi is also attractive, forming a low mound of glossy, deep green, basal leaves that are deeply lobed and slightly hairy. The leaves are also evergreen, providing interest in the garden even when the plant is not in bloom.

This plant prefers a sunny to partially shaded location and a moist, well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant once established and can be grown in a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. Geum coccineum Koi is also relatively low maintenance and does not require regular deadheading.

This perennial is a great choice for borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and containers. Its bright blooms and attractive foliage provide a pop of color in the garden and also make great cut flowers for arrangements. It is also deer resistant and attracts bees and butterflies, making it a great choice for wildlife gardens.
